Clerk/Treasurer |
The City Clerk/Treasurer's Office bills and collects property taxes. Property valuations are computed by the Assessor's Office. Property taxes are determined early in December of each year based on levies of the six independent taxing units: the City of West Allis, the State of Wisconsin, the County of Milwaukee, Milwaukee County Metro Sewer District, the School District of West Allis, and Milwaukee Area Technical College. Tax credits determined by the State of Wisconsin are applied to the levies to affect the net taxes due. Special assessments and special charges (if applicable) are added to the tax amount to create the amount due. Tax records may be searched and viewed online. Paying TaxesTaxes are due, in full, January 31 of each year. All special assessments and special charges are due in full on January 31 of each year. The City allows taxes to be paid on an interest free installment plan. To qualify, the property owner must pay a minimum of all special assessments and special charges (if any) plus third of the tax amount due on or before January 31 of that year. To continue on the interest free installment plan, the second third of the tax due must be paid on or before March 31. The balance or the last third of the taxes due must be paid on or before May 31. Any violation of the above requirements invalidates the interest free qualification and interest and penalties must be collected on the amount in violation. The interest and penalties total one and one half percent per month and start February 1. All tax payments received are processed each business day. The affected accounts are electronically updated and confirmation can be made at 8:00 a.m. the following business day. To receive a receipt for your tax payment, include a self-addressed, stamped envelope with your tax payment. Tax bills may be paid online using the City's online e-Services. Credit card payments will include an additional service fee, paid to the credit card processor, not the City of West Allis. The customer assumes full responsibility for all online transactions and no warranty or guarantee is given by the City of West Allis for online ACH or credit card transactions. Copies of Tax Bills and Tax ReceiptsCopies of tax bills and tax payment receipts are available by request. There is a charge of $0.25 for each page. Mail your request to the Treasurer's Office at City Hall or put in the Depository at City Hall. Tax bills may also be printed out from the City's website in Property Search. Lottery and Gaming CreditIf you used your home as your primary residence on January 1 of the year in which property taxes are levied, you are eligible for a lottery credit. If you are eligible for the credit, but it is not on your bill, a Lottery and Gaming Credit application can be downloaded from from the Wisconsin Department of Revenue or you can complete one at the Treasurer's office.
