Development
The Department of Development actively works to enhance the community by expanding the tax base and attracting employment opportunities. West Allis has become a leader in the metro-Milwaukee area by focusing on community growth through redevelopment of older industrial properties and re-energizing neighborhoods through sound planning. The department creates redevelopment areas to capture new growth and investment while diversifying the tax base. Planning has opened the door for contemporary architecture, improved landscaping and building a bold image for the community. The department administers programs that assist start-up and business expansions. The department is a partner with community initiatives that promote West Allis as a place to live and do business.

Planning and Zoning Division
- Guides long range planning decisions
- Processes and reviews planning applications for site, landscaping, architectural, signage proposals, special uses, transitional uses, ordinance amendments, rezonings, certified survey maps, street or alley vacations, planned unit developments, and subdivision plats.

The Department of Development provides staff support for the Block Grant Committee, the Economic Development Committee, the Community Development Authority, the Fair Housing Board, the Historical Commission, the Plan Commission, and the Safety and Development Committee.
