Make a Splash @ Your Library! The 2010 Summer Reading Program runs from June 7 through August 27. By reading library books and/or magazines children can earn some or all of the following prizes: Coupons to area attractions such as the Zoo, Discovery World and State Park passes. After every 10 books or 200 minutes participants may guess the number of items in the fish bowl, play “fish for a sticker” game, choose an activity sheet and earn a sticker for the “waterpark” progression sheet. Read 100 books or read for 2000 minutes and earn a paperback book and more. Sign up for the Summer Reading Program! Read at your own pace. Children who are read to can also join.
Age Related Programs
Our Make a Splash @ Your Library kickoff program will feature the movie “What Makes a Fish a Fish? from www.DiveIntoYourImagination.com. This movie and craft program for all ages is offered on Wednesday, June 16 at 10:00 am and 1:30 pm in the Constitution Room. . No pre-registration is required. Get a nametag at the children’s information desk starting one-half hour before each session.
Water, Water, Everywhere and even some to drink! features stories, crafts, and fun for children ages 3-6 who have not completed K-5 kindergarten. This free 45-minute program is offered Mondays, June 14, 21, 28 an July 12 (the library is closed July 5) at 10:30 a.m. or 1:30 p.m. No pre-registration is required. Get a nametag at the children’s information desk starting one-half hour before each session. Come to any or to all. There is a limit of 24 children per session.
Surf’s Up @ the Library features stories, crafts, and activities for children ages 6 (who have completed K-5 kindergarten) through 9. This free 1-hour program is offered Tuesdays, June 22, 29, July 6 and July 13 at 1:30pm. No pre-registration is required. Get a nametag at the children’s information desk starting one-half hour before each session. Come to any or to all. There is a limit of 24 children per session.
Summer Reading Club: Love to read? Love to talk about books after you’ve read them? Then join our summer reading book club for ages 10-13 or grades 5-8, two Tuesdays in July – July 6 and July 20, from 3:00pm to 4:00pm in the Constitution Room. This year’s pick is the first two books of Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, The Lightning Thief and The Sea of Monsters, an adventure story about a boy whose life is changed forever when he finds out he’s actually the son of a Greek god. Members come to the first meeting having read the book or watched the movie The Lightning Thief and will receive and read a free copy of The Sea of Monsters for the second meeting. Pre-registration is required. Pick up a form and return it to Children’s Department by July 2, 2010.There is a limit of 16 members. A FREE copy of The Sea of Monsters will be given out at the July 6th book club meeting. The Lightning Thief will not be provided.
Tuesday Evening Programs
Tuesday evening programs all start at 7:00 and are held in the Constitution Room. Programs feature World Dance Party on July 6th; The Bassmeister , a fishing comedy show on July 13th; Book Bait, with Storyteller Jean-Andrew on July 20th; and Mad Scientist, Steve Markiewicz on July 27th. A maximum of 100 numbers is given out at the children’s information desk, starting one hour before each program. Strollers should be parked in the small room next to the Constitution room. Wednesday Programs
Numbers are available for the free Wednesday programs at the Children's Information Desk beginning one hour before each program. A maximum of 100 numbers is given out per program. Preschoolers, with supervision, are welcome to attend the programs where all ages are indicated. All programs are held in the Constitution room. Strollers should be parked in the small room next to the Constitution Room. See the Library Calendar for program dates and times. Programs and performers this year include: Nature in the Parks presents Hunting with Henry the Heron, Rick Allen’s Magic, Water and You!, Kidsplay, Tales from the Reef with Puppet Story Theate, PintSize Polkas, Walt Smith’s Touch of Magic, Mary Tooley’s Sensational Sharks! Recyclable Craft Contest
Enter the recyclable craft contest and make your own original Sea Creature using all recycled materials such as boxes, cans, foil, paper, packaging, etc. It’s okay to use markers, paint, tape, and glue. Recycle and add your imagination! Children ages 3 to 14 are eligible to participate and the entries are divided into 5 age categories. An official summer reading tee shirt is awarded to the top winners. Contest entries are accepted between August 1 and 16. See the contest entry form for more details.
Teen Summer Reading Program
For teens ages 12-18 or in grades 6-12. Read books, win prizes - our third summer of Teen Summer Reading is here! Reading logs will be available at the adult Information desk beginning June 1, and may be turned in beginning June 15. Stay tuned to the blog @ waplteens.blogspot.com for more fun stuff to do at the library this summer, like Wii gaming, a writers’ camp, and an Eclipse party.
