Crime Prevention >Join Operation Identification. Engrave your Wisconsin driver's license number on easily carried away items of value. The Police Department will loan you an engraver and provide you with window decals free of charge. No burglar or thief wants to be caught with items marked in this manner. If your items are stolen and then recovered by police anywhere in the United States, they can be quickly and easily identified by a police computer. Mark items on the back, top, bottom or inside of the case. Don't mark on a part easily removed such as a handle, strap, or cover. Some valuables such as jewelry, antiques, furs, silverware, and collector's items cannot be engraved without reducing their value and should be photographed in color, videotaped, or marked with an indelible pen. You should mark anything of value that a thief could carry away, including bicycles, televisions, VCR's and DVD players, cameras, stereos, binoculars, sports equipment, radios, calculators, musical instruments, tools, computers, kitchen appliances and guns. Make a written inventory that includes brand names, model numbers, serial numbers, and the identifying number, date of purchase and price. Keep this list along with photos and credit card numbers, in a safe place to help police and insurance companies if a burglary occurs. Bicycle licenses are offered free of charge. When you apply for a bicycle license, your bicycle will be registered with the West Allis Police Department and you will receive a sticker by mail to place on your bicycle. Licensing your bicycle will help return your bicycle if it is lost or stolen. You may apply online for a bicycle license, or apply in person at the West Allis Police Department, 11301 W. Lincoln Avenue between the hours of 7:00 am and 6:00 pm each weekday. |
